Moissanite is a synthetic gemstone manufactured after the finding of the original material in a meteorite. Laboratory manufactured, Moissanite costs about a tenth of the diamond price yet does not have the "cheap" appearance many attribute to cubic zirconia. Moissanite does not have the same artificality as cubic zirconia and is much harder. Unlike a machine-made diamond or polished fake, Moissanite is its own gem class and requires only manufacture and grading to enter the world Moissanite supply. The weight of Moissanite gives it away, being much lighter than a diamond and detectable by that means.
Sophistication in gemstones and colored backings and treatments and polishes has led to an increased value for white gems and "pure" stones. Moissanite is well positioned in that gem market and creates an affordable synthetic gem option for jewelry such as wedding rings, necklaces, rings and bracelets, as well as purses, buttons, and other accessories. Doubt as to the authenticity of many diamond gems has left a window for a midclass gem between real diamonds and cubic zirconia. An extremely adept collector of rare jewelry could easily build an unmatched original estate of Moissanite pieces without the staggering cost.
Mine-based gem sources cannot be termed sterile in their production of laboratory synthethized gems, yet the manufacture of Moissanite also does not carry the "heavy baggage" of mined stones. Laboratory "mined" synthetic Moissanite can be sold in loose stones or mounted in ring or jewelry settings. Moissanite has an excellent degree of wearability and a high susceptibility to brilliant color diversion. For those who cannot bring themselves to play into the value manipulation of diamonds, Moissanite provides another clear gem option with outstanding virtues and suitable hardness for setting and stone collection.

I just received a moissanite ring. It's lovely and relatively inexpensive. However, it does change color. In certain lights it can go from a G to a J in color. But in other lights (IE. bright sunlight, cloudy days) it turns a greenish-yellowish color. He got the ring at JCPenney, not sure if they have the best quality. If my ring just stayed it's nice white color, it would be perfect. But I still like it. |
