Diamonds have long been the "gold" standard of engagement and wedding rings and legacy gifts. Diamonds have also been used for industrial uses for drill bits and industrial cutting. But the value of diamonds is so high they are very precious and the scarcity controlled by a few major gem companies worldwide. The rise in cost (irrespective of value) has left many consumers with little chocie but to go into debt to afford an appropriate occasional gift or wedding ring, or risk those diamonds in casual wear and informal tasks risking loss of theft.
A Moissanite diamond stone costs about a tenth of what an equal grade diamond would. Loupe and other testing equipment can determine Moissanite versus diamond stones immediately. The tradition heretofore of substituting cubic zirconia for diamonds may change entirely due to the relative value of Moissanite jewelry. A mossanite gem is not a synthetic diamond. Yet Moissanite jewelry allows a new opportunity for design and crafting which does not exist elsewhere. An entirely new history of Moissanite jewelry has yet to be carved out of the repertoire of designer skills.
Moissanite jewelry can be termed by some as inside the semi-precious class of gems, while to some others any stone manufactured inside a laboratory will never have the mystery or romance of a mined stone. While the advertising of the Moissanite product may not be as sophisticated or as widespread as the media campaign to promote siamonds, neither is Moissanite jewelry as costly as diamonds.
